US ZIP Codes by State: Complete Reference Table (All 50 + DC)
2026-09-12 · US Address Generator
The US ZIP code is not random. Its leading 2-3 digits almost always map to a state. Read the prefix and you can usually tell the state, often even the city area. Here is a complete reference table across all 50 states and Washington, DC.
How a 5-digit ZIP is structured
- 1st digit: broad region. 0 Northeast, 1 Mid-Atlantic, 3 Southeast, 5-6 Midwest, 8 Mountain, 9 West.
- 2nd-3rd: a state or a sectional center.
- 4th-5th: the delivery area.
For example, 90001 is Los Angeles, 10001 is Manhattan, 20001 is Washington, DC.

- ZIP prefixes bind to states; a CA address with a 1001 ZIP will fail.
- A state does not have one ZIP — California alone has dozens.
- A ZIP locates a block, not a doorway.
